Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Relax and unwind whilst taking in the spectacular beauty and landmarks of Madeira during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing tour especially designed for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.
Funchal, Ponta do Garajau, Statue of Christ the Redeemer, Natural Park of Garajau, Machico Village
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive east, where Funchal first began to expand, then on to Ponta do Garajau. This viewpoint is famous for the Statue of Christ the Redeemer that stands here, looking out at sea with outstretched arms, as well as the spectacular panoramic views over Funchal and the Natural Park of Garajau. After a photo stop here, re-board your coach and continue driving along the southern coast, through Machico Village, hidden in the bay and stretching out over the hillsides. Once a small fishing village, Machico is now a holiday resort.
Porto da Cruz Village, Faial, Ribiero Frio, Trout Hatchery, Woodlands, Lush Vegetation, Poiso Pass
Next, head towards the northern part of the island to the village of Porto da Cruz (Port of the Cross), named after the cross placed by explorers on the bay, which was once utilized as a port. Following a stop in the village, re-board your coach for the drive inland, past Faial and on to Ribeiro Frio, where the carefully cultivated grounds of the trout hatchery can be found. From here, the road ascends steeply through woodlands and lush green vegetation, passing through the approximately 4,308-foot (about 1,413-metre) Poiso Pass.
Pico Ruivo, Pico do Arieiro, Terreiro da Luta, Peace Monument, Statue of the Virgin & Child, Monte
From Poiso Pass, the summits of the island's highest peaks, the approximately 6,104-foot (about 1,862-metre) Pico Ruivo, and approximately 5,937-foot (about 1,818-metre) Pico do Arieiro, should be visible at a distance on the right. Once over the pass, the road descends rapidly to Terreiro da Luta. At approximately 2,670 feet (about 886 metres), this was once the terminus of the old funicular railway, long-since dismantled, by which visitors travelled from town to the mountain scenery. The nearby Peace Monument is a large column of rough basalt erected in 1925, and surmounted by a statue of the Virgin and Child. Your tour concludes with a short drive back to the pier via Monte Village.
