Chennai, San Thome Basilica, Kapaleeswara Temple
Depart the pier for a scenic tour of majestic Chennai, the city established by the British as the seat of power and home of the 'Splendours of the Raj'. Discover its heart and soul whilst driving along the shore road to your first stop, the nearby San Thome Basilica, believed to house the remains of St. Thomas the Apostle. He was believed to have been martyred on what is now known as St. Thomas Mount. Following your visit, re-board your coach and head to the revered Kapaleeswara Temple. During your guided tour, gain a unique insight into Hinduism and southern Indian culture.
Government Museum, Buildings, Galleries, Bronze Gallery, Victoria Hall
Next, re-board your coach and drive to the Government Museum, which is spread over an area of approximately 16 acres (about 6.5 hectares) with six independent buildings. Of its 46 galleries, visit the most famous, the Bronze Gallery, which houses a notable collection of approximately 1,500 objects related to Hinduism, Buddhist, and Jainism. The collection showcases the rich artisanal heritage of the region, ranging from the early centuries of the Christian era to recent times. Leaving the Government Museum, walk over to Victoria Hall for a photo stop. Named after Queen Victoria, then Empress of India, the building represents a fine example of British architecture and was built to commemorate the Queen's golden jubilee.
High Court, Marina Beach, Photo Stop
Next, re-board your coach and drive past the High Court, a magnificent building reputed to be the finest example of Indo-Saracenic architecture in India. Your route continues along the approximately eight-mile-long (about 13-mile-long) Marina Beach, the city's most famous landmark and second-longest beach in the world. A photo stop is made here to marvel at the spectacular coastal and ocean views. Afterward, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.
