Excursion Takuhi shrine visit tour at Isole Oki

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Discover the spiritual heritage and dramatic landscapes of Nishinoshima, one of the inhabited islands of the Oki Islands UNESCO Global Geopark, an archipelago shaped by volcanic forces and ancient traditions.

Begin from Urago Port and travel to Takuhi Shrine, a National Treasure set halfway up Mt. Takuhi. Founded around 1000 AD, the shrine is remarkable for its architecture built partially beneath an overhanging cave, creating a sacred and atmospheric setting. After walking up a steep mountain path, experience the quiet reverence of this ancient site and learn about its enduring legends, including the sacred fire said to have guided Emperor Gotoba. A staff member or priest may be present to share insights into the shrine’s rituals, history, and spiritual significance.

Continue to the breathtaking Matengai Cliff, one of Japan’s tallest sea cliffs at 257 meters. Walk along the clifftop for sweeping views of the Kuniga coastline, dramatic rock formations, and the vast Japan Sea. The open pastures surrounding the cliff are often home to freely grazing cows and horses, adding to the serene and expansive atmosphere.

Conclude your experience back at Urago Port, enriched by a memorable blend of spiritual discovery and extraordinary natural scenery.

Note

Please note: Guests must remove their shoes when entering Takuhi Shrine. Grazing horses and cows may be present at Matengai Cliff; for safety, do not touch or startle them, avoid walking directly behind them, and watch for animal droppings on the ground. Approximately 2.1 km of walking is required, including trekking paths and around 350 steps one way (approximately 700 steps in total) on the approach to Takuhi Shrine. Trekking shoes or sturdy sneakers are recommended.
