Excursion The convict heritage tour tour at Norfolk
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Norfolk Island’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kingston area is a Georgian-era complex where the landscape still reverberates with history, much of it fascinating though not necessarily pleasant. This immersive excursion, led by a local guide/historian, offers an informative overview of the facts and myths associated with the First and Second Convict Settlements in this highly significant heritage area.
Over time, four waves of settlement have reached Norfolk, a small dot afloat in the vast open waters of the Southern Pacific. East Polynesian Seafarers constituted the earliest arrivals, followed by two waves of British settlers – the First Convict Settlement of 1788-1814 and the Second Convict Settlement, which lasted until 1855 and was notorious for the harshness of its penal discipline. Descendants of the famous Bounty Mutineers of Pitcairn Island came in 1856, and most current-day residents are their descendants.
After your 25-minute coach drive from the jetty, you’ll begin your Kingston survey with a half-hour walk through the Pentagonal Prison ruins, then reboard for a quick hop to historic Norfolk Island Cemetery, where a walk among the headstones reveals tragic details surrounding the demise of convicts buried here in what was once known as “Hell in Paradise.”
Now apprised of Norfolk’s checkered history and exposed to its array of Georgian-era buildings, you’ll return by coach to the far more accommodating environment of your ship.
