Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Immerse yourself in the timeless artistry of Tosa Washi, one of Japan’s most celebrated traditional crafts, and experience the peaceful rhythm of rural Kochi. This hands-on cultural encounter blends creativity, natural beauty, and local heritage.
Begin at Tosa Washi Craft Village QRAUD, the heart of Kochi’s papermaking tradition. With over a thousand years of history, Tosa Washi is renowned for its remarkable strength, lightness, and delicate texture. Guided by skilled artisans, learn how natural plant fibers are transformed into beautiful sheets of handmade paper. From preparing the pulp to forming and lifting the sheets, each step reveals the precision and artistry passed down through generations. Create your own unique piece of Washi, a meaningful and personal keepsake of your time in Japan.
Following your workshop, continue to the serene Nagoyagawachinka Bridge, a traditional “Chinka-bashi” or submersible bridge spanning the clear waters of the Niyodo River. Built without railings so it can safely submerge during seasonal floods, this simple yet striking structure reflects a philosophy of living in harmony with nature. Take in the calm river scenery, the surrounding mountains, and the quiet beauty of rural life.
After enjoying this peaceful landscape, return to Tosa Washi Craft Village QRAUD to collect your handcrafted Washi piece before heading back to the pier, enriched by a memorable encounter with Kochi’s artistry and natural charm.
Note
Please note: This experience includes approximately 0.5 km of walking, mostly on paved surfaces. The submersible bridge may be slippery, especially in wet conditions. Comfortable clothing and sneakers are recommended.
