Excursion Willie creek pearl farm tour at Broome

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Learn the secrets of oyster harvesting and cultivation on this in-depth exploration tour at Wille Creek Pearl Farm. Board an air-conditioned motorcoach at the pier for the scenic one-hour ride to Willie Creek Pearl Farm.

Located 38 kms north of Broome, Willie Creek Pearl Farm is perfectly situated on the scenic and protected tidal estuary of Willie Creek. This protected tidal estuary, where freshwater meets and mixes with salty ocean waters, provides the perfect environment for growing the Pinctada Maxima oyster that produces the world-renowned South Sea Pearl.

Once you arrive, your expert guide shares the secrets of how these unique and stunning cultured pearls are produced. Learn all about evaluating the luster, shape and value of individual pearls. Your tour also includes a demonstration of how oysters are seeded. Only professional pearl technicians can perform the precise operation. In a sterile environment, the oyster is opened to allow the technician to insert an irritant into the shell.

Your guide shares how it usually takes the oyster two to three years to produce a good-sized pearl. During that time, the oysters are cleaned and nurtured before being examined by pearl technicians who hope to find a large and lustrous pearl inside.

After the demonstration, climb aboard a boat to get up close and personal with a tour of the oyster beds. Under these waters is the breeding ground for the famous Pinctada Maxima oyster, the only oyster that cultivates South Sea pearls. The Pinctada Maxima oyster can grow as large as a foot in diameter and can produce a satiny lustrous pearl ranging from 9 millimeters to 20 millimeters in size.

Before returning for the scenic ride back to the ship, visit the elegant showroom to see exquisite handmade jewelry featuring Broome pearls, diamonds and Western Australian gold.

Return with a one-hour drive back to the ship.
