Excursion Wine & history of gran canaria tour at Las Palmas
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
This 5-½ hour guided coach tour is designed first and foremost for wine lovers. Visit a leading winery, learn about their harvesting and winemaking processes and taste outstanding wines. Go on to admire a spectacular volcanic crater before delving into history at the beautiful Casa de Colon mansion.
La Higuera Mayor Winery
Leave the pier by coach for the 40-minute drive south-east to La Higuera Mayor Vineyard and Winery, standing at 450 meters above sea level in the Telde area. Take a guided visit around the vineyard and learn about the grape harvesting process and the steps in producing this outstanding wine with its mineral hints due to the high-ash content of the volcanic soil. Understand the techniques which distinguish the creation of different young, red and white protected designation of origin wines of outstanding quality. Taste some of each accompanied by cheese and bread to cleanse the palate in between.
Caldera de Bandama, Casa de Colon
Re-board the coach and head back northward to Caldera de Bandama. Get off for a photo stop above this ancient crater formed five thousand million years ago in the Pico de Bandama volcano. The crater is 216 meters deep, 574 meters high and 1,000 meters wide, and contains a rich variety of volcanic ash and botanic species. Head back to Las Palmas for a stop in the old town to visit the architecturally striking Casa de Colon historic mansion where - as its name suggests - Columbus is believed to have stayed in 1492 outward bound on his epic voyage. Tour the mansion-museum with a specialist guide who will reveal the building's history. Return to the coach for the 20-minute drive back to the pier.
