Excursion Wirebird tour tour at St Helena
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Search for St. Helena's endemic bird, the Wirebird, now listed worldwide as a critically endangered species. Be guided by an expert from the St Helena National Trust, boarding their 4 x 4 vehicle to Deadwood Plain for sightings of this rare species. The tour goes to the bird's nesting areas, where the guide explains the behaviors of the Wirebird. Learn also of the conservation efforts taken to protect the island's only surviving endemic bird.
More officially referred to as the St. Helena plover (Charadrius sanctaehelenae), the Wirebird is the national bird of St. Helena and has been depicted on the island's currency. As of 2016, an estimated 560 mature adult birds exist, although this has increased from the critical number of 200 ten years ago.
Extraordinary views of the island are also seen on this tour, some described as an artist paint box. Bring your camera to capture the beautiful views, and possibly an image of the Wirebird.
Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, mostly on uneven, grassy surfaces, making this tour less suitable for those with limited mobility. A rain jacket and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
