Depart the pier for the scenic, drive to Russborough House for a guided tour. Russborough House is a Palladian mansion offering one of the finest guided tours in Ireland. There are so many items to admire on our tour from the beauty of the Lafranchini ceilings to a wonderful collection of world-class art and furnishings.
Russborough House was built for Joseph Leeson, later Earl of Milltown. Building began in 1741 and took ten years to complete. There is also information about the house being constructed by wealthy Dublin brewer Joseph Leeson, the first Earl of Milltown, right up to the present day. Although Sir Alfred and Lady Beit donated much of their priceless art collection to the National Gallery of Ireland in 1986, the collection that remains at Russborough is equally precious.
Next, re-board your coach and proceed for a fresh, homemade lunch with tea/coffee in a beautiful, private home. Owner, chef & host Anne, extends a very warm welcome into her home, offering delicious fayre and wonderful hospitality in beautiful period surroundings. On arrival at this country period residence you will enjoy a welcome Bellini before settling down to a delicious home-cooked lunch. After lunch, re-board your coach and continue on for a visit to the Powerscourt Gardens. The estate was originally an important strategic site for the Anglo-Normans who came to Ireland in the 12th century. By the year 1300,a castle was built and in the possession of the le Por (Power) family from which it takes its name. Today, the estate is owned by the Slazenger family.
Upon arrival, enter the estate along an avenue lined with 200 -year-old beech trees. Some free time is made available to explore the superbly landscaped formal Italian and Japanese gardens at your leisure. The gardens, originally begun in the 1740s by Richard Wingfield, the Viscount Powerscourt, are set against the background of the Wicklow Hills, a truly breath-taking vista. You can also view a video on the history of the estate, and browse several small gift shops at offering high-quality linens, woollen goods, crafts, and local foodstuffs and souvenirs. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.
